A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind you, the dog saw it first, and a dog never lies. Ask anyone in the fish-market quarter in Brno about old Hanka's grey lurcher, Zora, the one with an ear that stood up and an ear that didn't. She sat under the lime trees at the wedding feast, right beside the bride's chair, and when the groom's cousin Tomáš came sauntering over with his speech and his good teeth, Zora lay her head flat on her paws and showed him the whites of her eyes.

Everybody laughed. The bride laughed loudest, and the groom laughed because he had to. Tomáš bent to pat her flank as though she were a cushion, and she rose, turned her back on him, and walked away so slowly it looked like a ceremony of its own.

Later, when the lanterns were guttering and the fiddler had gone home, the bride found her husband alone at the gate with his collar undone. 'Tell me the truth,' she said. 'Did you ever like him?' He shook his head. 'Then we have a problem,' she said, 'because my grandmother always told me not to trust anyone who doesn't like dogs, and that dog has never once been wrong about a man.'

He laughed, and she didn't, and they both looked down at the lurcher, who had padded back to the gate and sat between their feet as if the matter were settled. Tomáš was already halfway down the lane, walking with his hands in his pockets, and Zora thumped her tail once on the cobbles, slow and satisfied, the way a sentry signs off a long watch.
