Forest scene with tent on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The main image shows a large tattoo on the upper arm depicting a sunlit forest with tall dark trunks, green undergrowth and an orange tent at the base. The shading is soft and photographic, with light beams falling through the trees. Two smaller photographs on the right show a misty pine forest with sunbeams and a campsite with orange and cream tents.

The light came through the pines at a slant that turned every needle to wire, and Ruth had perhaps ten minutes to get the tent up before the sun moved off the hollow. Her brother was swearing at the inner door zip. The ground under the trees was soft as cake and smelt of resin and cold earth, and somewhere below us a stream was trying to be heard over the birds.

The tent was Gran's, the orange one with the patched flysheet and a peg loop mended with fishing line. She had slept in it every August until her knees gave out, and she never once said why she always chose the same gap between the big trunks. We found out because a biscuit tin was still in the pocket of the inner door, rattling with pencil stubs and a rusted compass. Inside the lid someone had drawn this exact clearing, the fallen stump and the slope going down to the water, and under it was one line in her round hand: first light at six, stay where it's warm.
Folded beneath the drawing was a sheet of paper covered in names and dates going back to 1958, each written in a different hand, and every entry ended with a small sun in the margin. Ruth knew none of the names until she reached the bottom, where her grandmother had signed herself and left the rest of the sheet blank.
At six the beams came down through the trunks and the canvas glowed the colour of marmalade held up to a window. Ruth took a pencil from the tin, wrote her own name beneath Gran's, and drew a small sun beside it, because that was how the others had done it.
