The orchard at Coldharbour had given nothing for three summers, and Mary Ashdown came down the lane that August with a ladder on her shoulder and a letter in her apron pocket she had not yet opened. Her sister's handwriting was looping and quick, the way it had been since they were girls passing notes under the chapel pews.

The old pear by the gate had been split by lightning before either of them was born. Their grandmother said it bore one fruit a year and that the fruit kept whatever a family could not say out loud. After Ruth sold their father's share of the orchard to the cider men without a word, Mary had taken her knife to the bark and cut a single word into it, FORGIVEN, meaning it as a dare rather than a prayer. She had cut a small cross beside it too, because their mother would have wanted that, and then she had gone inside and not spoken to Ruth for four years.
Now the bark had grown over the cuts, the word stretched and slanted like a line of ink drawn in a hurry. Mary set the ladder against the trunk and climbed until she could trace the letters with her thumb. The pear had one fruit left on its highest branch, small and yellow, untouched by wasp or wind. She reached for it, then stopped, and let her hand rest on the bark instead.
She read the letter at the gate with the sun on her neck. It was short. Ruth wanted to come home for the picking, if she was welcome. Mary folded the paper, put the pear in her pocket, and walked down the lane to the cottage with the blue door, where she knocked twice and waited, as if she were the one who had been away.
