Forgiven script with a cross

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line black script reads the word Forgiven across the skin, with the final letters rising into a small cross. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering has flowing loops and tails. The image is a close crop in warm, neutral lighting, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The board was longer than my measuring had allowed for, so by the time I reached the final letters the word had nowhere to go but up. I bent the tail of the n back on itself and let the brush run thin, the way my old master taught me, so the gold would not clot in the curls.

Mrs Haldane came to watch on Tuesdays, as she had since the smack Kestrel went down off Spurn with her boy aboard. She sat on the end pew with her gloves folded in her lap and said nothing while I worked. The vicar had asked for a line from Colossians, but she had sent word that she would have one word or none, and it would be the one she had chosen.

On the last Tuesday she came up the ladder with me to see the tail of the word. 'Forgiven,' she said, not as a question. I asked whether it was meant for the man who had sold her son the boat with a cracked hull and sworn it was sound. She shook her head and said it was not for him. It was for the hand she had held the lamp with that night, which had not got down to the slip quick enough.

I had no cross in my orders. But the g had come down too low and the n had nowhere left to climb, so I loaded a little gold onto the point of my brush and drew a plain cross where the last stroke ran off the wood. It looked, I thought, like a mast with a yard across it. Mrs Haldane laid her palm flat against the wet paint and held it there until it was dry enough to leave no mark, then went down the ladder without a word.
