Four button outlines on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four black outlined sewing buttons sit in a row across the forearm, each with a different hole pattern, and a thin line runs from the first button towards the sleeve edge like thread. The linework is even and bold with little or no shading, and the tattoo is solid black ink on pale skin. The background shows a grey shirt cuff with two matching buttons, and the shallow focus keeps the arm sharp in the foreground.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hold still, boy, and mind the lamp. Thirty-one days out of Valparaíso and every coat aboard the Hesper is missing something, which is how a ship's tailor earns his keep. There, that's the fourth one fast. I've left the thread trailing from the first on purpose, so don't reach for the scissors yet.

My master Tobin taught me that a button is only a promise that the coat will come back to somebody. He kept a biscuit tin full of them, every one cut from a jacket belonging to a man who had gone over the side or stayed behind on some quay for good. He never threw one away. When the Hesper paid off at Liverpool the tin went with him to his sister's in Walton, and the last thing he asked me for, before the fever had him, was a needle and a length of linen thread.

The first button on that sleeve came out of his own coat, the one he wore the night we rounded the Horn and he swore the mast would come down on us. The thread runs up towards the cuff because he said the men who never came home still had to be sewn in somewhere, and a cuff is where a hand goes first when the cold gets in.

So when you ask me why four, I'll tell you three are for the tin and one is for whoever sits at this table next. Now pass me the spool before the bell goes, and if you can't tell which button is which, that's the point. A coat only remembers what you stitch onto it.
