Fox and figure in a circular woodland scene

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular woodland scene shows a figure in profile beside a fox, with bare tree trunks rising behind them. The trees and figure are drawn with solid black linework and fills, while the ground and background shading are built from fine stippled dots. The design is entirely in black ink and grey tones, sitting centred on the forearm against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Osric had counted the bell strokes twice before he noticed the fox was still there, sitting in the frost at the edge of the cutting where the ash trees gave way to bare beech. The lauds bell had rung a full hour ago. He had a sack of kindling on one shoulder and the mule's rope in his other fist, and the mule had stopped too, ears forward, breath smoking.

"Go on, then," he told the animal, though it was not the fox he meant.

The fox did not run. It turned its narrow head and looked at him the way the abbot looked at a novice who had mislaid his psalter, patient and faintly disappointed. Then it trotted ahead along the path, stopping every few yards to glance back, until Osric understood he was meant to follow. He had walked these woods for nineteen winters and never once been led.

The path ended at a hollow where the snow had melted in a ring around a fallen stone. Beside it lay a small bundle of grey wool, and beside that, very still, a girl of perhaps six with frost on her lashes. The fox settled against her back and began, with great deliberation, to breathe warmth into the hollow of her arm.

Osric set down the sack and knelt in the wet. He began to unwind his own cloak, and the fox watched him over its shoulder, and did not look away until the girl stirred.
