A second image on the right shows a labelled star chart of the Gemini constellation, with the stars Castor and Pollux marked.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats were late coming in that October, so the two Marsh boys went down to the harbour wall to count them home. Pollux, the stronger of the pair, swam out past the breakwater to look. Castor stayed on the wall with his hands in his coat pockets, because he had been born sickly and his mother had made him promise to keep his feet dry.

The sea took the swimmer's cap, then his arm, and a lantern came up out of the dark that nobody had lit. Castor saw it first. He could not swim, so he did the only thing a boy in Sallow Bay could do, which was to lie flat on the cold stones and beg whatever the fishermen begged. Pollux came up the steps with brine running off him and found his brother's face wet. Afterwards neither of them could say which had been crying.

The old women of the town told it differently. They said the lantern belonged to the sea, that the sea had given back the drowned men in exchange for one boy who would not go under, and that Pollux had agreed to a bargain he had not understood. Pollux never said whether this was true. On clear nights after that he walked up to the headland, and the two brothers stood side by side in the sky, one bright and one dim, and the fishermen steered home by both of them.

Castor's light was always the fainter. His mother used to say that was how you could tell which of them had stayed on land to mind her.
