Cat-eared woman portrait on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey portrait of a woman with a sleek black bob that forms a hood with cat ears, looking to one side with whiskers drawn across her cheek. Small stars and a bell on a collar sit near the bottom left, with stippled shading fading into the skin. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of the tattoo on a pale arm against white bedding.

The cat had been sleeping on the ledge above the Ferrier's bakery since the spring the bell went missing, and Mirela Oduya had given up asking whose she was. Everyone in Saltergate agreed she was the baker's, and the baker swore she was nobody's, which suited the cat fine. When the wool merchant's boy came up the hill asking for the hooded girl who could find lost things, Mirela sent him away with a flour-dusted thumb pointing at the sky.

The boy came back at dusk with a silver locket and a tear-stained face. His grandmother's ring had gone down a drain grate, and he was sure the cat had taken it, because the cat had been staring at the grate all afternoon. Mirela did not believe in cats taking rings. She went anyway, pulling her black hood up against the sleet, and the cat came down off the ledge and walked ahead of them both without once looking back to see if they followed.
They found the ring tucked in a bed of old coins under the grate, and beside it a small brass bell that had clearly been there for years. Mirela picked up the bell and turned it over. Engraved on its underside was the same star pattern that ran along the collar of the cat's silver chain, and she realised the cat had not been stealing anything at all. It had been guarding the boy's ring for him, and was waiting for someone sensible enough to look properly.
The next morning the cat was back on the ledge, bell ringing faintly at her throat, as if nothing had happened. Mirela left a warm roll on the sill, and for once the cat ate it without making her wait.
