Geometric cat on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised cat face with large round eyes and a small nose is built from angular, diamond-shaped facets, with a lower section of hexagons forming a pattern beneath it. The cat's features are rendered in solid black, while the facets and hexagons use dense stippled dots and fine outlines to create tonal shading. The design is in black and grey only and fills the frame, sitting on what appears to be the calf.

Dear Nell,

The Bramleys came off the top rows heavy this week, and the wasps got into the windfalls before we did. Dad has us sorting in the lower field now, the crates stacked three high along the wall where the shade falls in neat diamonds through the leaves. Mrs Hale's grey tom has claimed the top crate as his own. He sits there from first light with his eyes half shut and his ears laid flat, watching us the way a magistrate watches a queue.
Yesterday Tom Lacey brought his smoker up from the hives to take the honey before the frost. The bees had built their cells in the old cider press, rows of wax as perfect as anything the pattern-book man ever drew, and the cat came down off his crate to sit in the grass beneath them. Tom says he has never once seen a cat so interested in bees. I said the cat was interested in the hexagons. Tom laughed and called me a daft article, but I went and looked, and he was right about the honey and I was right about the shape of it. Every cell the same size, every one touching six others, nothing wasted.
I keep thinking about that when I count the crates. We have one hundred and twelve picked and four hundred still on the trees. Dad says we will finish by Thursday if the rain holds off. The cat seems to think the count is wrong. Each evening he lifts his head and looks at the stack as if one of them has gone missing.
Come at the weekend if you can. Bring the good knife and your boots. I will save you the top crate, though I suspect you will have to ask the cat first.
Love, Jo
