Geometric dog head on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A dog's head, seen from the front, is built from angular faceted panels outlined in black. Parallel hatched lines shade the planes of the face and ears, while the eyes and nose are filled solid black. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin, with a plain background of wood flooring and a dark sleeve at the top edge.

Hetty Marr had cut glass for thirty years in the workshop behind the forge at Coldharbour, and she had never once drawn a thing freehand. Her father had taught her to rule every line first, to find the planes of a thing before she looked at its surface. So when the Pargeter boy brought her a photograph of his dog and asked for it in glass, she measured the animal's head from the picture with a pair of dividers and began breaking it into triangles.

The dog was called Tansy and belonged to nobody in particular. She slept under the bridge and walked the lane to the forest edge each morning as if she had business there. Hetty worked through the week with the lead came and the grozing iron, setting each facet where a hatched shadow would fall. The ears came out sharp as sails. The eyes she left solid, two dark lozenges, because her father said a face needed one place where the light gave up.
When the panel was finished and leaded into the workshop window, the boy stood in the street and squinted through it. He said the dog looked the way she used to look at him, straight on and unbothered. Hetty said nothing. She was thinking about how every line had been decided, and how the real Tansy had never once been that neat.
That evening Tansy came up the lane, stopped at the window and sat down in front of it, head tilted exactly as the glass was tilted. Hetty watched from the bench and let the lamp burn low, unsure which of the two of them had the better angles.
