Geometric flamingo on an ankle

Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single flamingo is drawn in black line work, built from angular, faceted shapes with the neck curved into a sharp S and one leg standing on a thin stick line. The fill is a mix of solid black areas and open outlines, with a few small dotted or shaded sections on the body. The photo is black and grey, showing the tattoo on the outer ankle and lower leg against a textured pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, child, the wind will hold off while I talk. You see the salt pans past the breakwater, that white glare? Every flamingo on Isla Sorrento was folded from the same sheet of pink paper, and the god who did it had a ruler and no patience. That's why they stand so stiff, all corners, and why their necks bend in one hard S, like someone correcting a sum.

Tomas Ferreira, a net man with clever hands, tried to keep one. In the winter of the great storm he carved a flamingo from driftwood, facet by facet, with his grandfather's knife. Every cut was straight. He could not make the neck soft, so he gave up on softness and pinned the bird to the wall above his bed with four nails, thinking a thing that could not fly off a wall would at least stay put.

The bird did not stay. Tomas woke to find the nails bent and the wall bare, and a single thin line of sand running from the window down to the water. Out in the shallows the flamingo stood on one leg, the way they do when they are thinking, its other leg still folded up somewhere under the lagoon, waiting for him to decide.

So if you want one, I will not stop you. Just know which leg it stands on, and never count them twice.
