Geometric fox on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo of a sitting fox, built from angular, faceted lines with a pointed snout and ears. The linework is even and fine, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The fox sits centrally against a plain background, with a hand holding the arm on the left and pink fabric on the right.

Dear Win,

The fox went up over the Co-op window on Tuesday, and Mrs Pargeter has already asked whether we might make a hedgehog for the Coronation bunting, which you know I will not do. Mr Ashdown folded the first one from the back of a ration book, the corners sharp as a surveyor's stake, and it was only when I took it home that I saw he had never once drawn the thing before folding. He just knew where the creases wanted to go.

He left the shop in March, you'll remember, after the business with the bicycle. Before he went he gave me the sheet of brown paper with the pattern, every line a fold, and told me a fox is only a square that has decided against being a square. I laughed at him. I still laugh at him, but I keep that paper flat under the till.

Last week a girl from the school came in with her grandfather's pocket watch to be mended and asked if I could make her a fox that would not fall apart in her satchel. I told her to press every crease with her thumbnail, the way Mr Ashdown did, and to hold the point of the snout between finger and thumb until it set. She looked at the fox as if it might bite. I think she'll come back for another.

Enough of the shop. Mother says the gooseberries have come on, and I have promised to bring you a fox of your own when we see you at Whitsun, though I may need to practise the ears.

Your loving sister, Dorothy
