Geometric fox on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small seated fox is drawn in black outline, built from angular facets in the manner of origami paper folding. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the fox sits upright with its ears, face and tail formed from straight segments. The tattoo is centred on the upper arm against plain white, with a hand gripping the arm on the left and a pink top on the right.

Dear Ruth,

The snow closed the pass on Tuesday, and the landlord has given me the room over the bar, the one with the cracked ink well on the sill. I have no one to talk to but the fire, so you will have to be the one I write to. You remember Grandad's rule: one sheet, no scissors, no glue, and every fold must be a decision. He taught me on the back of a wine merchant's invoice when I was seven, and I was furious that I could not cut the corners off.
Last night the landlord's boy came up with a bundle of old menus for kindling. I kept the thickest card back and folded it while the candle guttered. I did the ears first, then the long straight back, then the tail tucked round the forepaws the way Grandad did it. It took me four attempts. The fox kept collapsing into a kite until I stopped trying to make it pretty and let each edge answer the one before.
Here is the strange part. When it was finished it sat up on the sill as if it had been waiting, facing the window where the snow has finally stopped. I have not put it in my bag. I think I will leave it there for whoever comes up after me, with a note that says only: one sheet, no cuts.
Love, Aunt Maud
