Geometric hand and wrist designs on a beach
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long blonde hair wears a white crochet bikini and silver body chains on a sandy beach. Black geometric patterns, including diamonds, chevrons and a zigzag band, cover the back of the wrist and the fingers, with linework that looks fine and even. The image is bright and warm, with the sea and sky softly blurred behind the subject, and the ink could be a tattoo or a temporary design.

The net-mender's daughter was sent down to the slipway at low water with a pot of ink and a stick of bone, because her father's hands had begun to shake and the fishermen would not wait. Nobody in Porthgarrow wrote anything down. The tides were kept on skin, in the old way, so that a person could carry the sea about with them.

Her father had taught her the marks on his own forearm when she was small: a diamond for slack water, a chevron for the flood, a zigzag band for the place where the rocks show their teeth. She had learned them the way you learn a song, without meaning to. Now she copied them onto the backs of her hands each morning, pricking the lines fine and even, and the boats went out by her knuckles.
One grey morning the mackerel came in early and the harbour master wanted the boats out before the ebb. She counted the chevrons twice and the diamonds once, and the numbers did not agree. She sat on the wet stone with her hand flat, and the sea came up over her wrist, and she understood that the marks had never been about the water at all. They were about the gap between what a person wrote and what a person saw.
She sent the boats out on the second flood, and two of them came back heavy. Her father never asked which mark she had trusted. He only tapped the diamond on her wrist and said that was the one he'd have chosen too.
