Geometric triangle tattoo on a foot

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

The left panel shows small pots of paint and ink on a glossy glass surface. The right panel shows a bare foot with a geometric tattoo across the top, built from overlapping triangles that form a star-like burst. The lines are solid and the fills are flat, with navy, teal, pink, red and yellow shapes set against pale bedding.

By four the ovens were already breathing, and Dorota had lined the steel bench with saucers of food colouring like a painter's palette. She didn't say much before the first tray went in. She pointed at the glaze, then at the jar of pistachio powder, then at me, which meant I was on sugar.

The starburst was her idea. Every Saturday she cut a sheet of cooling sponge into triangles with a knife she kept sharper than anything at home, and laid them out in rays on the board until the points overlapped into a burst. Navy first, the colour of the sky over the canal before it turns. Then teal, a pink so hot it looked like a warning, and a yellow she mixed from saffron water and icing sugar. I watched her get the edges straight without a ruler.

Nobody tells you how fast the light changes at that hour. By the time the shutters went up on Hale Street the window had gone from black to the grey of old pewter, and the triangles on the board were set. She dusted them with silver leaf and sealed the lot. I asked her why triangles and not circles, the way a proper cake shop should. She shrugged and said circles roll off the tray.

We sold the last of them by eight, boxed in twos. A man in a cycling jacket bought four and asked what the pattern was called. Dorota looked at the empty board, then at the first pale light coming through the glass. Just morning, she said, and wrapped his change in paper.
