Globe with mountains and sunset on an arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A traditional style tattoo of a globe on a stand, with a sunset, snow-capped mountains and dark pine trees inside the sphere. The mountains are shaded in grey and black, while the sun, base and ornamental trim use bold orange, red and yellow. The design fills the frame against a plain arm, with a blurred room in the background.

The globe had been Tomas's grandfather's, and it sat on the sill of the mapmaker's shop in Kendal with its stand cracked and glued. Every spring the shop's owner, a widow named Edith Vane, took it down to dust the sphere, and every spring she found the same thing wrong: the painted mountains had flaked from the northern edge where the varnish had yellowed. Tomas offered to repaint them. She told him the old ones were made by a man who had crossed the Kirkstone Pass in snow, and that a stranger's brush would only be guessing.

So in March he drove up to the pass himself, with a sketchbook and a flask of tea gone cold. The sky over the fells turned the colour of a struck match at half five, and he sat on a dry-stone wall drawing the ridge until his fingers stopped working. Below him the pines along the beck stood black against the light, and a farmer's dog barked somewhere out of sight. He drew what the sun did to the snow, the grey shadows folding into the peaks, the orange bleeding up behind them like a lamp left on in another room.
Back in the shop he laid the sketches beside the globe and held the brush over the flaking edge. Edith watched him from the counter, saying nothing. When he finally looked up she was smiling at the window, where the real sunset had come through the glass and lit the whole sphere from inside, so that the painted sun and the real one seemed, for a moment, to be the same thing.
