Globe with mouse ears on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo shows a globe drawn with thin black meridian and parallel lines, topped by two solid black circles that form mouse-style ears. The linework is clean and uniform, with the ears filled in solid black and no shading. The skin tone is light and the photo is taken at close range with a warm background, with a black shoe in the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on the Tuesday market since before the bells, and Maud Teague was the only trader who had not thought to cover her stall. Her globes sat in a row on the trestle, each one no bigger than a turnip, painted blue for sea and cream for land, with the lines ruled on in black ink so fine a fingernail could catch them. Each had two round black knobs on its crown, which she had been told were for holding, though nobody ever held them.

A boy came out of the fish hall with a sack on his shoulder and stopped to look. He was the baker's son from the lane above the square, and he had carried one question all week. Why did the world on her stall have no edges, when the map pinned in the Guildhall had them plain as a fence? Maud said that edges were only where people stopped drawing. He did not understand that, so she lifted the largest globe, turned it slowly under the dripping awning, and let the black knobs swing toward him like the ears of a listening dog.

He asked what the lines were for. She said they were the roads the sea took when nobody was watching, and that every one of them met at the poles, where the rain came from. He asked whether a man could walk along one. She said a man could, if he kept his left hand on the cream and his right on the blue, and never once looked down at his own boots.

He paid her a penny he did not have, and she took it because the penny was warm from his fist. When he had gone up the lane she found that a thin line of rain had run along one of her meridians and pooled in the cup of the north pole, and she left it there, because it looked like the world had decided to keep something for itself.
