Mickey Mouse head on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of Mickey Mouse's head in profile, facing left, sits on the inner forearm. The design uses a black outline with solid black ears, eye and nose, leaving the smiling face and mouth in bare skin tone. The photo is taken from above with the wrist angled towards the camera, and a red sandal and dark clothing are visible in the blurred background.

Every winter the lamp at Gull Skerry wanted feeding, and every winter the keeper's wife climbed the hundred and twelve steps with a can of paraffin and a sour face. The year her knees gave out, the job passed to the mouse who lived in the wall of the lamp room. He had two ears as round as pennies and a grin the fishermen swore could be seen from the mainland on a foggy day, though nobody had ever checked.

He carried the oil in a thimble, one trip at a time, and each trip took the best part of an hour. Gulls mocked him from the rail. A deckhand off the herring boat tossed him a crust and asked whether the Admiralty paid mice in biscuits. He kept climbing. On the ninth night of the gale the wick began to smoke, and he saw that the brass housing was cracked and the flame was leaning out over the water like a drunk man at a bar.

He could not lift the lamp, so he did the one thing a mouse could do. He went into the wall where the old clockwork ran and turned the gear back by hand, tooth by tooth, until the light swung true again. Three ships passed Gull Skerry that night without touching the rocks. In the morning the keeper found a thimble full of oil by the door and a single grey hair tied round the brass lever like a ribbon.

The keeper's wife never climbed the stairs again. She painted a small black circle on the lamp room door, and every spring the fishermen touch it for luck before they put out from the harbour.
