Glowing Mickey Mouse outline on wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A simple outline of a Mickey Mouse head sits on the inner wrist, glowing bright blue as if under ultraviolet light. The linework is a single even line with no shading, and the ink is shown in one colour against the skin. The hand is raised in the frame with a blurred sign and clock visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, because this is the story of Eddie Marsh and the blacklight he bought off a bankrupt cinema in Margate. Nobody in the Ocean Ballroom had seen anything glow like it. Eddie had no brush worth the name, so he used a tin of luminous paint and a steady hand, and he drew a round-eared mouse on the back wall beside the fire door, the same shape every child in town had stitched onto their satchel.

Now the trouble. Mrs Pring ran the cloakroom and said a mouse was for babies and a wall was no place for one. Eddie said the wall would hold it, and that a thing drawn for children ought to be seen by them. So each Saturday, when the lights went down and the band struck up, the mouse rose out of the dark in blue, and the little ones pressed their faces against the rail to watch it.

The turn came in the autumn the damp got into the plaster. Eddie climbed the ladder to paint it over, brush raised, and stopped. Below him a girl of seven stood with her palm turned up to the blue light, tracing the outline in the air with one finger, the way you'd trace a name on a steamed-up window. He didn't paint. He climbed down and fetched a second tin.

That's why there's a mouse on the wall still, and why the girl, grown and married in Ramsgate now, swears the blue has never once faded. Ask her. Go on, hold your hands under the lamp and see for yourselves.
