Goat head in a pentagram with galaxy background
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A horned goat head with a heart on its snout and a small cross on its forehead sits centrally inside a bold black pentagram outline. The goat is shaded in soft pinks and browns with pale highlights, and its horns are twisted and pink-orange. The background is a galaxy of purple, teal and green with gold four-pointed stars, and the thick black linework gives the design a strong outline.

You will not believe what the Palais has taken in this week. Mr Pryce had the sign painter in on Monday to touch up the old lettering over the door, and the lad, Dennis, painted a goat's head on the back of the ticket booth just to pass the time. Nobody asked him to. It has a pentagram round it, black as tar, and the inside is the night sky, purples and greens with gold stars dropped in like sequins. Mrs Hale from the cloakroom says it is blasphemous. I told her it is a goat with a heart on its nose, which is hardly the Devil's work.
Then on Friday the goat looked back at me. That is what I wrote in the ledger, and I stand by it. The dance started at eight, and by ten the floor was a fog of Brylcreem and cheap scent, and the band was playing Moonlight Serenade slow for the last waltz. I was counting coats when the lights dipped, and I swear the little cross on its forehead caught the glitter ball. Nobody else saw it. They were too busy with their partners.
I have decided to keep the ticket booth shut for a week. Mr Pryce says we need the takings. I say the goat needs a rest. Come up for the Whitsun dance if you can, and bring your good shoes. I will save you the last waltz, and you can tell me whether that goat is smiling or not.
Love, Frank
