Rain had been drumming on the awning of the Sunday market since before seven, and Ruth Achebe had stopped pretending the canvas would hold. A boy of about nine came back for the third time that morning, a sandwich bag of coins clutched in one fist. He wanted the small arrows, but he had only enough for two. Ruth counted the coins twice, then gave him the arrows and a sheet of silver triangles he had not asked for. "Those are for when you're older," she said. He looked at her as though she had told him something he could already see for himself.

The last sheet in the stack was older than the others, its backing gone soft and yellow. Her mother had sold these from this same pitch for thirty years, and tucked behind it was a folded square of paper in her careful hand: Gold is for the ones who are going. Silver is for the ones who stay. Ruth read it twice, then folded it back into the sheet.

When the rain eased at noon, she pressed the last pair of arrows onto the edge of the trestle, points facing the station, and left them there for whoever passed next.
