Gold metallic flash sheet with mandala and palms
Geometric · Colour · Flash
A white sheet of metallic temporary tattoo designs in gold, with a few silver elements. The largest motif is a mandala with a blue centre, and the sheet also includes a fish-scale arc, two palm trees, an anchor, a column of small triangles, a set of bars and the script word breathe. The designs are flat, outlined artwork with clean edges and no shading, arranged with space between each motif.

Tobiah, the crate came up from the drowned lido wrapped in oilcloth, and inside were forty sheets of something that was not paper and not quite metal. Each one was printed with gold: palm trees bent toward nothing, a tiny anchor, a flower with a blue eye at its heart. Mother wanted them melted down for wire, and the council agreed it was a waste of good light, but I kept one back under my coat before the weighing.

Ysolde at the salt works says the flower is a mandala, a thing people drew to keep their minds from spilling out of them. She rubbed a palm onto her wrist to show me. The gold had no weight and no smell, and when she lifted her hand the palm was still there, bright as a coin left in the rain. The word on the lower corner says breathe, in a joined-up hand that someone must have practised a thousand times. I have started doing what it says whenever the tunnel air goes thin and the lamps start to dim.
The council took the sheet off me on Thursday and held it up to the lighthouse glass, turning it until the sun caught the fish-scale arc and threw it across the wall like a net. They decided it was a map of a coastline that no longer exists, which is not wrong, though I think it is a map of how people used to wear the sea on their skin. Nobody laughed when I said so. Dad's old boat is still tied to the harbour wall, and the anchor on the sheet looks exactly like the one hanging off its bow.
I am keeping the palm I pressed on my forearm, the one that has survived three washings and a fight with the pump man. Come home before the autumn tide. Bring your breath with you, and I will show you the rest of the gold.
