The river at Mellow Hythe ran so clear in the dry years that the children could count the pebbles from the bridge. Old Ansel the ferryman had a rule that no one crossed on a hot afternoon without first sitting on the stone step to rest, and so there was always a crowd of tired people on the steps, arguing over bread and debts and whose goat had got into whose beans.

In the third summer of the drought a woman came down the road with a boy on her hip and no coin in her apron. The ferryman's brother, a loud man named Tobiah Crane, told her the fare was a penny and she had better find one. She said she had never had a penny in her life. He laughed, and the others laughed with him, and the boy began to cry.
Ansel had been mending a net and did not look up. He only said, "Sit a while, then. The water has been waiting for you all year." When the woman sat, he carried the boy across himself, pole in one hand, and set him down on the far bank with a fig from his pocket. Tobiah shouted that the ferry would be broken by winter. Ansel said that was a fair thing to worry about, and went back to his net.
That autumn the rains came back, and the river rose over the steps, and the loud men went round by the long road. Somebody painted a word on the ferry board in soft white letters, though nobody remembered who. Grace, it said, and below it, in plainer letters, wins.
