Green sprinkle donut with a bite

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style green frosted doughnut with a bitten edge and a golden-brown base, decorated with pink, blue, yellow and dark sprinkles. Smooth shading and dark outlines give it a rounded, glossy look. Partial tattoos of a pink item and an ice cream cone sit at the top of the frame, and the skin is lit from the side.

The doughnut had been Mrs Pargeter's idea of a joke, and by Tuesday it had become the office's idea of a legend. Nobody at Crumb and Co. could remember who first bit it. Derek swore it was the courier. Priya blamed the cleaner, who had been dismissed for less. What everyone agreed on was that the green frosting had not been there at breakfast, and that the little sprinkles had rearranged themselves into a rough line across the top, like a runway for ants.

The bite itself was the trouble. It was a clean, polite crescent, the kind a person takes when they are hungry and in a hurry and have decided that nobody is watching. Sam from accounts stood over the tray with his reading glasses pushed up and said it was the most confident bite he had ever seen. Then he apologised to the doughnut, which made the intern laugh so hard she had to sit down on the stationery cupboard.

By Friday somebody had stuck a paper cone beside the tray with a note in biro: For the one who ate the doughnut, you owe us a cherry. Nobody claimed the cone. Nobody claimed the cherry either, though by the afternoon a single red sweet sat on the blotter, flattened and faintly guilty. Mrs Pargeter came in at four, looked at the tray, looked at the cherry, and said only, "Well, somebody's enjoying themselves." She took the cherry, unwrapped nothing, and ate it standing up.
