GRL and PWR lettering on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two words are tattooed on the fingers of a hand: GRL on the top finger and PWR on the finger below it. The lettering is a thin, hand-drawn black script with uneven strokes, set on the side of the fingers. The photo has warm skin tones and bright red nail polish, with a blurred background of dark and light shapes that keeps the focus on the tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ffion had the biro cap between her teeth when Mr Adeyemi came past the common room window, so she dragged me behind the lockers by my sleeve and said we had four minutes. I held my hand out flat because I thought she wanted to check my nails. She didn't. She uncapped the pen, pressed her tongue to her lip the way she did when she was concentrating on something stupid, and wrote GRL across the top finger in letters that sloped downhill like they were running late.

"Your turn," she said. "Pick a word."
I said the first thing that came to mind, which was PWR, because I had been staring at the council election posters all week and they had that word printed in a purple nobody could argue with. She laughed so hard the pen skidded and the P came out with a tail. She said it looked like a fish hook. I said it looked like a fist, and she said that was worse.
The ink lasted nine days, which was longer than the ban on eating in corridors, and then it faded to grey and then to nothing in the bath. Ffion moved to Cardiff in the summer. We still send each other photos of our hands, usually when one of us is about to do something braver than the other thinks is sensible, and the old letters are still there under the knuckle if you look for them.
