GRL PWR lettering on two ankles
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two pairs of legs stand on a light wooden floor, each with the words GRL PWR inked in plain capital letters above the ankle. The lettering is a clean, thin, monochrome block style in dark blue-black ink, with the upper tattoo sitting slightly larger than the lower one. The composition is a close, eye-level crop with dark trousers, pale socks, black leather shoes and black trainers, and a soft blurred background.

The stencil went on at half five, under the dock lamps at Riverside Quay, while the Ada Mae's engine turned over somewhere behind the sheds. Bev held the torch and said the letters looked like they had been cut out of a tin lid, which was the idea. Pat, who ran the back room above the chip shop on Freeman Street, had done three tattoos on the fleet that winter, and she took her payment in cash folded into a sandwich bag.

They had come to her because of the Thursday before, when Skipper Lowther had sent Bev down the hold for the second lamp, then docked her share for leaving the trawl door open. Nell had stood on the gantry and said nothing. Pat asked what the words were for, and Nell said they were for the next time somebody told her the winch was no place for a girl. Pat nodded, wiped the stencil with spirit, and said the thin block capitals would be the hardest to keep straight on a moving leg.
The needle buzzed for forty minutes. Bev went first, then Nell, and the upper line sat a shade larger because Nell had pressed harder on the stencil, and Pat said it would settle to match by spring. When they stepped out into the wet morning, the gulls were already working the gutters and the Ada Mae was coming in low with a full hold.
Lowther was waiting on the quay with his arms folded. He looked at their boots, then at the dark ink showing above the rubber, and for once he said nothing about either. He tipped his cap, climbed down the ladder and made room at the winch, so the first haul of the day went to the two of them.
