The brush wants a loaded hand and a steady wrist, and I had neither the morning Mrs Pargeter came down the towpath carrying a biscuit tin. Her husband Ronnie had gone under at Hythe the winter before, and she wanted the Mabel Rose repainted before the spring hire fleet came through. She set the tin on my bench with shaking hands. Inside were three folded letters gone soft as cloth, and a stub of pencil worn to a nub.

I said I'd letter whatever she liked along the stern. She wanted a line from the Corinthians, the one her mother read at every funeral in the chapel above the lock: love never fails. I had learned my swashes from an old signwriter called Dunning, who taught me to pull a long curl without lifting the brush. So I lettered it in cream on black, the capital L hooking down under the hull like a fishing line, the descenders trailing over the rubbing strake. It took two days in the rain under the tarpaulin, and the paint never quite dried between the loops.

On the third morning the tin was back on the bench. Inside, there was a fourth letter, unfolded, with a single line in pencil: Not for Ronnie. He never believed a word of it, and I used to think that was the failing. Paint it for whoever buys her next.

I sat with that a while. At the tail of the script, I had put a small outlined heart without asking, because Dunning always finished a job with something the customer hadn't paid for. Mrs Pargeter looked at it for a long time, then nodded once and walked back up the towpath with the empty tin under her arm.
