Handshake with Love your friends lettering
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo showing a handshake with pale hands shaded in red and green cuffs at the wrists. The text Love your friends sits above the design and Die laughing sits below it, both in black lettering. Bold black outlines and solid red and green fills give it a flat, bright colour finish against the skin.

Nobody on Brighton pier had ever seen Ezra Tull and Walter Pring agree on anything, so when they shook on a bet, the stallholders put down their candyfloss to watch. The wager was simple: whoever laughed first at the Punch and Judy man would buy the other a pint of stout. Ezra kept a straight face through three blows of the cudgel. Walter held his through a gull stealing the Judy doll's bonnet. By dusk they were still gripping hands, knuckles gone white, faces stiff as their Sunday collars.

Mrs Dunstable from the rock stall offered a shilling to whoever let go first. The tide crept up the shingle. A dog barked at nothing. Walter's green velvet cuff, which his sister had stitched for him in a fit of optimism, began to itch, and he could not scratch it without breaking the grip. So he pulled the face of a boiled haddock, and Ezra, who had been solemn since the Jubilee, snorted so hard into his moustache that his bowler slid off the back of his head.
That was the whole contest. Both men had laughed, and both swore the other had started it, so the bookmaker's boy declared the bet void and pocketed the stakes for his trouble. Ezra bought the stout anyway. They drank it one-handed, because neither would let go of the other first, and Walter said it was the only sensible way to share a pint with a man he could not abide.
The next morning they were back at the same rail, shaking hands out of habit before either had said good morning. The gulls had learned to wait.
