Two lines in pencil gone soft at the edges: You're so brilliant. Don't soon forget. She read it standing at the scullery sink with her hands still wet, and the kettle began its climb toward a whistle while she tried to work out who it was meant for. Tom had sat the scholarship examination in March and was still waiting on the letter. Her father had gone down to the picket line before dawn without his tea, and Nell suspected he had written the note for Tom and left it where she would find it first.

She did what Dad would have done and said nothing. She ironed Tom's good shirt, the one with the collar that never sat flat, and slid the note into the breast pocket where an envelope from Ashworth Grammar would go if it came. Mrs Greaves from next door brought round a tin of broken biscuits and asked after the strike, and Nell answered in the flat voice she used for customers at the chemist's counter.

The post came at eleven. Tom tore it open in the yard with his thumb, read it twice, then stood looking up at the washing as though it had said something to him. Nell took the note from his pocket and held it beside the letter so the two grey sheets sat side by side against the wall. Neither of them said a word, and the pencil did the rest.
