Happy Camper lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm bearing a small tattoo of the words Happy Camper in black, hand-drawn lettering. The text sits over a pale blue filled circle, with a thin brown stick with a marshmallow-like tip running horizontally across the middle. The linework is clean and even, the blue is flat, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the design.

The tent had gone up between the runner beans and the washing line before breakfast, and by teatime it had collected a torch, two sleeping bags and a tin of cocoa that nobody was allowed to open yet. Dad hammered the last peg in with the heel of his shoe. "Proper campsite," he said, looking at the lawn as if it might argue. Mae did not believe him, but she liked that he was trying.

The fire was the old barbecue with its grill scraped clean, and Mae said that didn't count as a fire. Dad said the marshmallows didn't care. He handed her the stick he had whittled from the hazel by the fence, its tip sharpened to a point that looked like a pencil that had given up. She held the pale puff over the last grey glow of charcoal and watched it swell, then turn gold, then go black at one edge like a bruise on a peach. The neighbour's cat sat on the fence and judged them both.
The marshmallow slid off the stick when she turned too fast and landed in the grass. "Five-second rule," Dad said, and she was already laughing, the sticky sugar on her fingers, the dark garden full of small noises. They ate the burnt one anyway, and then the second, and then the cocoa tin got opened after all.
In the morning she found a biscuit tin lid in the shed, painted it a pale blue with the last of the kitchen emulsion, and wrote HAPPY CAMPER across it in capitals that wandered uphill. She drew the stick across the middle, marshmallow and all. She pinned it to the tent flap with a clothes peg. When the wind came over the fence the sign swung and knocked the peg loose, and she left it swinging.
