Heart and blue puzzle piece
Mixed · Photo
A black outlined heart with a tapering, brush-like stroke sits to the upper left of a blue puzzle piece. The puzzle piece has a dark outline, a light highlight border and blue shading that gives it a slightly raised, three-dimensional look. The background is smooth skin, with the photo framed tightly around the tattoo.

The last lock before Hatton had the wind in it, and Mags Rowell had given up on the jigsaw twice before the boat cleared the bottom gate. The box lid showed a lighthouse on a white cliff, and the table in the saloon of the narrowboat Patience had been holding three hundred pieces of it since Easter. Her brother Danny had started it. He was the one who could look at a scrap of sky and know where it lived without turning it over.

The missing piece turned up in the coal scuttle, nudged against the kindling. It was blue, the deep blue of the cut under the bridge at Braunston, and one knob had been chewed soft by a dog that had died years ago on somebody else's towpath. Mags held it up to the porthole. It was the only piece in the box that wasn't sky or sea or white paint, and she could not think how it had got into the coal at all.
She fitted it into the gap beside the lamp post and the whole corner clicked into place. Then, because the condensation on the window had started to run, she drew a heart in it with one finger and let its tail trail down the glass the way Danny used to draw the tow rope on his maps. The heart came out lopsided. The blue piece sat beside it, a bit too sure of itself.
She left the lighthouse unfinished on the table and went up on deck to watch the heart drip until the next lock.
