Fine line black tattoo of an outlined heart and cursive script on the inside of a forearm, photographed in warm sepia tones.

Heart and cursive script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin outlined heart sits at the upper left, joined to a flowing cursive word written in a single continuous black line. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey to black against the skin. The photograph is warm and sepia-toned, with the tattoo centred across the forearm and a blurred background.

I have been writing to you on the back of her bill of fare for three nights now, since the ink in my case has frozen solid and the post coach will not run until the thaw.

Downstairs a boy called Tomas plays patience with a pack missing the queen of hearts. He says he is saving the gap for his sister, who went to Leeds to work in a mill and has not written since Michaelmas. I told him a lost card often turns up in the strangest places, and he looked at me as if I had said the moon was made of cheese.

This morning I wrote your name in the frost on the inside of the window, a long looping word, and watched the sun lift it off in pieces before breakfast. I have kept the shape of it in my head since. The heart I drew beside it in the margin of this page is badly done, because my hand was cold and the pen skipped, but you will know what I meant by it.

The coach is due Thursday if the drifts allow. Tell your mother the gate is mended. I will tie my blue ribbon to the post at the bottom of the lane so you can see it from the road when the coach comes round the bend, and if the ribbon is still there on Thursday, I will know you read this and came anyway.
