Heart and female symbol on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A person takes a mirror selfie, holding a white phone in front of their face, which is out of frame. A small black tattoo of an outlined heart joined to a female (Venus) symbol sits on the side of the ribcage below the arm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, against bare skin, while a dark sleeveless top and a bright, slightly washed-out background fill the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Kellaway had been lettering boats in Scarrow Bay for eleven years, and she could tell a good hull from a poor one by the way the paint sat on the curve. The Board's clerk had sent a single line: name the boat *Constance Ella* on the transom, nothing else. So she mixed the gold, pricked the stencil, and then, without asking anyone, drew a small sign beneath the name in the same fine hand she used for her notebooks.

It was a circle with a cross under it, and joined to the top of the circle was an outlined heart, no shading, the line no thicker than a bristle. Her grandmother had called it the mirror sign, because the old tinsmiths used it for polished plate and because it looked like a face looking back. Maud had never decided which meaning she liked best.

Dessie Corran came down the slipway with a flask of tea and stopped at the transom. "What's that?" he said. "Nobody asked for that." Maud kept brushing. "It's where the name goes, underneath." He squinted, then ran a thumb along the outline, careful of the wet gold. He said his mother had painted the first Constance Ella herself, forty years back, and had never once put a heart on anything. Maud said she knew. Her hand stayed steady, and the line stayed hair thin.

Dessie stood a long while in the wind coming off the water. "Leave it," he said at last. "Nobody will see it unless they look close." He handed her the flask, and she thought that was about the right size for a thing like that, something you only found if you were looking back.
