Heart in a looping circle on a wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a solid heart sits inside two open, looping purple circles, with three dots arranged above the heart. The linework is even and bold, and the heart is filled in solid, with a slight sheen from the skin. The single purple ink is set against pale skin, and the design is centred in a close crop of the inner wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada had carved the stamp the winter her father stopped coming back from the high wood, and by spring it had worn smooth at the edges from use. She pressed it into the damp paper of every jar that left the kitchen at Hollin's End: the heart in the middle, the two rings running round it like ripples on a pond, and the three dots above where she had gouged them with the tip of a nail. Villagers called it Ada's mark. They trusted jam with it on the lid.

The ink was bramble juice boiled down with a spoonful of alum, and it never quite dried the same colour twice. Some mornings it came up the deep violet of the lane hedges after rain. Other mornings it was the colour of bruises going yellow at the rim, and Ada would scrape the stamp clean and start again before the carrier came up from the mill road.
The carrier was a boy called Tobias Reeve who never looked up from his cart. On the third Thursday of April he took a jar, turned it over, and said the stamp had come out crooked. Ada took the jar back and looked at the mark: the rings slightly off true, the heart leaning as if it were listening. Then she understood it was not crooked at all. The forest had moved the ground under the paper overnight, as it did, and the rings had followed.
She wiped the stamp, inked it again, and pressed it down once more, carefully, the way you would sign your name to something you meant to keep.
