Heart-shaped puzzle piece tattoo in three photos

Mixed · Photo

The tattoo is a heart outline formed from two interlocking puzzle pieces, drawn in clean black linework. In each photo one piece is filled with solid colour, in dark purple on the left and bottom right and teal on the top right, while the rest stays unshaded. The three images are arranged as a collage on a plain skin background.

We found the missing pieces in the lamp room, wedged behind the spare wick boxes, where she must have hidden them to keep them from the gulls.

I spent the winter sorting edges at the kitchen table while the light swept over us every twelve seconds. Pieces of sky, pieces of sea, a red pier with a man's coat missing from it. Dad would climb down from the gallery at six and find me still at it, shaking his head, saying a puzzle is only a promise that something fits. I did not believe him until March, when two pieces refused every corner and every colour, then slid together under my thumb as though they had been waiting.

They made a heart, the pair of them. I coloured my piece in teal ink, the shade of the water below the cliff, and posted the bare half to Ruth in Whitby with a note that said keep it. She wrote back that she had already filled hers in deep purple and kept it under her pillow since October. Neither of us has finished the rest of the picture. Some nights I think that is the point.
