Heartbeat line and heart on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a heartbeat trace running across the skin, with an outlined heart at its centre. The thin linework is pale, appearing as light or white ink on the skin, with no shading. The design is centred in a square frame and spans most of the width of the image.

The pen on the seismograph in the gatehouse at Caddon Keep has not been replaced since 1974, so its line comes out thin and grey, like a pencil that has been licked. Arthur winds the drum every Sunday anyway. He says the ground under the hill has a pulse, and somebody ought to count it while the rest of the county is too busy to notice.

I came up in February with a box of spare nibs and a plan to tell him the thing was broken. The paper was looped over the spindle like a bolt of cloth. I unrolled it across the flagstones, and there it was: a long, nearly level run of ink, a few small stutters, then one sharp spike that climbed almost to the top of the sheet and dropped away again. Around the spike, in pale chalk already flaking at the edges, Arthur had drawn a heart. Not a neat one. It sat over the trace the way a hand rests over a sleeping cat.
The east curtain wall came down on the night of that spike, he said, and not a soul in Caddon heard it except the old pen. I asked why he had drawn the heart at all. He put one finger on the outline and did not answer for a long time. 'The rest of the roll is only weather,' he said at last. 'That's the bit where somebody was holding on.'
We rewound the drum together, slowly, the paper whispering against the brass. When we finally set the pen at the end of the roll, it wrote a single flat line across the empty sheet, steady as a tide that had decided to stay.
