Heartbeat line and heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A heartbeat trace runs across the skin and rises into an outlined heart, with three open star outlines placed around the heart and the line. The linework is thin and uniform in solid black ink, with no shading or fill. A coin rests below the tattoo, giving a sense of scale against the pale skin and dark background.

The hall smelled of sausage rolls and floor polish, and Denise had been nursing the same warm sherry for forty minutes when Ray Pollard finally crossed the parquet towards her, a paper napkin folded in four and held in his fist like a betting slip. Thirty-one years since Hadley Road Comprehensive, and he still walked as if the corridor bell might go at any moment.

"You still owe me a biology project," he said, unfolding it on the trestle table beside a plate of Bourbons and a name badge that read HELLO, MY NAME IS ROSALIND. In blue biro was a wobbling line that spiked and dipped, and at its tail a heart drawn by someone who had never quite trusted a compass. Three stars sat around it like full stops. "Hewitt said it was the only page anyone would remember. You copied it off a ward monitor and I copied you."

Denise remembered the green glow, the bleep that slowed and then steadied, the night nurse who had let her sit up and watch. She had drawn that line so often in her exercise book that it had become a thing she could finish on her own, even when the real one would not. She smoothed the napkin flat against the cloth. The stars were not hers. Ray had drawn them in pencil and then gone over them in gold felt tip, the kind you got for effort, and one had smudged into the heart's curl.

"I never said thanks for the marks," he said. "You did the working out. I just got the glitter."

She folded the napkin back into four, slid it into her handbag beside her car keys, and asked him whether the bar was still doing the cheap wine. He grinned and went to find out, and she sat with the sherry going flat, feeling the paper press against her bag's lining like a pulse she could hear if she kept still.
