Heartbeat line tattoo flash sheet
Fine line · Mixed · Flash
A flash sheet of several heartbeat and ECG line designs arranged on a white background. Most lines are thin black strokes with some bolder sections, and a few include a heart outline, a small pictogram of two figures inside a heart, a solid red heart, and a red spray-shaded burst. Script wording appears in three places, and the lettering is also shown in black.

The paper unrolled from the ECG machine in the sick bay of the Halcyon Mary, somewhere south of the Azores, and Dr Ruth Adair held it up to the lamp. Forty-one days out from Avonmouth. The stoker in the second bunk had been grey since Tuesday, and the trace looked like a fence line after a gale, tall pen peaks scratched across the squared paper.

Oliver Penhallow, the third engineer, sat on the edge of the cot with his boots still laced and asked whether it was bad. She told him the truth in the flat voice she kept for weather reports. The rhythm had skipped, then steadied, and the spikes were tall but even now. He laughed, which seemed to hurt him, and asked her to read the next strip aloud as if it were a letter from home. So she did, line after line of small mountains and the long flat valleys between them.
By morning the captain wanted the traces logged. Ruth pinned the old strips to the wall beside the chart of the Atlantic and saw the pattern repeat itself: a tall peak, a small peak, a long quiet stretch, then the tall one again. The gaps looked like the swell she had crossed twice already, patient and unhurried. When she came back from the galley with the kettle, the bunk was empty. He had gone up on deck to watch the light on the headland.
She took down the strip with the highest peak, folded it into her logbook at the page for his name, and wrote the date beneath it in pencil. Then she climbed the companion ladder with the kettle still warm in her hand. At the rail, the sea had flattened to pewter, and the lighthouse on the cliffs blinked its own slow count across the water, one flash, then the dark, then one more.
