Heartbeat line tattoos in three placements

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A collage of three photographs showing heartbeat trace tattoos with a small heart in the centre of each line. The top-left example is blue on the forearm, the top-right is red on the upper chest near the collarbone, and the bottom example is a pale white or light line across the shoulder. All three use thin, even linework with flat colour and no shading, and the close crops keep the focus on the designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down on that bench, mind the wasp by the cups, and I'll tell you about the wall. You see the old brick along the bottom of the kitchen garden, the one the beans climb? My grandfather built it the spring the railway came through the valley, when the navvies were camped on the common and nobody slept for the whistles. He was a mason with a bad knee and a worse temper, and he had a daughter called Maud who could read the level better than he could.

Each evening she walked the course with a tin of chalk and a plumb line, marking where the coping should sit. The pattern she chalked was always the same: a little peak, a dip, a sharp spike, and in the middle a heart the size of a thumbnail, cut into a single stone. Grandfather said it was foolishness and wasted an hour. Maud said the wall had to keep time with the engines, or it would fall down the first time the ground shook.

On the night the big cutting slipped, the whole valley went dark and the bells in Ashby stopped mid-peal. Maud was out there with a lamp, counting the pulses of the rubble as it settled against the wall, and the wall held. Her heart-stone sat square in the middle of the run, and the chalk line ran straight out from it into the dark like a fuse nobody had lit.

Grandfather never mended that section, mind. He said the wall had its own way of counting, and who was he to argue. Pass me the secateurs, love, and mind the beans.
