Heartbeat line with heart, cross and treble clef
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The top photograph shows a thin black heartbeat line that runs into an outlined heart with a small cross inside it, on skin with a soft curve. The lower photograph, in greyscale, shows a treble clef leading into a heartbeat line with a few sharp peaks, set against a pale background. Both designs use clean, even linework with no shading, and the composition centres each tattoo on the body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The snow took the Ravensdale road by four o'clock, and by nine the Hollin Gate had nothing to do but listen to itself: the kettle, the cellar pump, the clock in the passage that ticked a fraction behind itself. You have been the night clerk here since October, which means you know every guest's key and none of their stories. Then Mrs Halloran came down the stairs in her good coat and asked whether the piano still worked.

It is a tall upright with two dead keys and a lid that sticks. She sits anyway, lifts the lid with her wrist and presses middle C with one knuckle. The note hangs in the room and goes flat halfway through. "Tobias tuned it," she says, meaning the piano man who left a fortnight ago with a case of forks and an unpaid bar tab. "He promised it would hold until spring." From her bag she unfolds a sheet of paper, a melody in pencil with a treble clef at its head, and beneath it a line that climbs and drops like a heartbeat on a hospital screen.
She doesn't play the tune. She taps the rhythm on the lid instead, and you watch her other hand draw the peaks in the condensation on the window: sharp, sharp, flat, sharp. "Ruth at the surgery said I should keep the strip," she says, "so I did. Tobias saw it on the bar and asked if he could copy it out for me. Said the clef was the only honest part."
At two the power fails and the room goes to candlelight. You carry a candle into the parlour and find her with both hands on the keys, playing the pencilled line one note at a time, the flat ones included. Outside the snow keeps falling. When the plough finally grinds through at seven, the first thing you see on the frosted glass is her trail of peaks, still beaded with water, rising toward the door.
