Hello Kitty and cherries on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A black outlined Hello Kitty face with a red bow sits on the forearm, with a pair of red cherries and a green leaf tattooed lower down near the wrist. The linework is bold and even, with flat red, green and white fills and no visible shading. The tattoo is photographed against a leopard print fabric, with a black studded wristband and part of a hand visible at the bottom of the frame.

The carter's mule would not climb past the third bend of the Sorrow Pass until somebody had set a cherry on the stone. Everyone in the valley knew this, and nobody who had made the crossing twice would argue with it. Old Hanne Brandt had been told it by her mother, who had been told it by a man who sold salt, so she kept a jar of dried cherries in her satchel and left one on the rock each time she came up the switchbacks.

Hanne was not a superstitious woman. She was a woman with a cart of wool and a debt to a tanner in Lindau, and the cat was the reason she believed. The cat lived in a split of rock above the bend, white as frost, with a red bow at one ear that never came untied, though no one had ever seen anyone tie it. It watched the road the way a shopkeeper watches a door. It took the cherry, always, and in its place it left a green leaf, sharp-edged, which Hanne learned to tuck into her collar for luck.
The spring the snow came early, she climbed alone and found the mule lying in the drift at the bend. The jar was empty. She had given the last cherry to a boy at the inn who had wept over his sister, and she had not thought about it since. She sat down in the snow beside the animal and said plainly that she had nothing left to pay with.
The cat came down the rock. It sniffed the empty jar, then her collar, then the leaf, and went back up without a sound. When the mule stood, Hanne saw two red cherries hung on the stone where the cat had been, bright as paint in the grey light, and the road ahead was clear to the top.
