Twin cherry cat heads tattoo
Colour · Photo
Two red cherries with cartoon cat faces, each wearing a pink bow, hang from a single green stem with a broad green leaf. The outlines are bold and black, with simple dot eyes, small noses and whiskers. The red and green fills are solid with soft shading on the cherries and leaf, set against plain skin.

In the walled kingdom of Hollin Gaunt, where the orchards were older than the kings who claimed them, two black-eyed cats hung from the same cherry branch and quarrelled about it every morning. Their names were Mab and Tiss. Each wore a pink bow tied by the same hand, and neither would admit the other had the bigger one.

The orchard keeper, a patient man called Oswin Reeve, had grafted their stem himself the spring they came out of a frost-killed bough. He said a stem that feeds two heads must learn to bend. Mab thought this was nonsense. Tiss thought it was a sign. When the autumn fair came, the queen's steward offered a purse for the pair, one cherry to sell and one to keep, and the cats were told to choose.
They did not choose. They sat on the stem through the whole night while the steward's men cut at the bough, and the saw bit only as far as the bark, because the wood was stubborn and the cats were stubborner. By dawn the steward had given up and gone home to his supper.
Mab said nothing for a long time. Then she tucked her bow under Tiss's chin and said that rain was coming, and that a leaf only keeps off the weather if both heads stay under it. So they stayed where they were, and the broad green leaf kept off the rain from both of them until the spring.
