Hello Kitty as Batman on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty figure, drawn with a blue body, red bow and Batman chest emblem and cape, is the central subject. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills frame it, with small bats and red and yellow comic-book action bubbles reading BAM and POW around it. The tattoo covers the upper arm and is photographed close up against a dark top and a black chair.

The cat came aboard at Braunston in the rain, a small white thing with a red bow on one ear and a cape cut from my late mother's blue tablecloth. She announced herself by leaping onto the coal bunker and striking a pose on the cabin roof. I told her the Grand Union was no place for a vigilante. She looked at me the way Mrs Ashby used to look at the lock keeper's bad tea, and that was the end of the argument.

Every evening after that she slipped over the side with a tin whistle on a string round her neck and came back past midnight with news. Thieves had been stripping lead from the bridge at Hatton. A man in a flat cap was selling narrowboat engines that had never seen a workshop. Each time she trotted along the gunwale, sat on the tiller and flicked her tail at the gold paint she had insisted I daub on the cabin side: BAM, then POW, in letters as tall as my hand.

On the third Thursday she did not come back. I walked the towpath at dawn with a torch and a bad knee and found her at the bottom lock, perched on the beam above a sack that was squirming and swearing. The man in the flat cap was trussed with the bell rope, and she was watching him with her ears flat and the expression of a cat who has been waiting all her life for a proper reason to be cross.

She came up my gangplank an hour later with her cape torn and her bow askew. She dropped a brass padlock on the gunwale, sat down and washed one paw. I picked up the lock and handed her a saucer of milk. It seemed the least a barge could do.
