Hello Kitty dot-to-dot face tattoo
Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a Hello Kitty style face outlined with numbered dots, like a connect-the-dots puzzle, with solid black eyes, nose and whisker dashes. A pink bow with black outlining sits at the upper right of the face. The ink is black and red on pale skin, photographed head on with the design filling most of the frame.

The puzzle sheet came out every Saturday with the tide table, and I had drawn the same cat for eleven years. Twenty-seven dots, numbered in the order the pencil should travel, so a child could follow the face round the page and finish with something that looked back at them. I never let anyone see the join. That was the trick, I thought, and nobody had ever asked me to explain it.

The summer the crab boats went quiet, the boy from the chandlery started coming in to colour the bow. He was nine, stubborn, and kept a stub of red crayon in his sock. He never once joined the dots in order. He went from fourteen back to three, then jumped to nineteen, saying the cat was looking the wrong way round. I had been told all my life that I was fussy, and I found myself agreeing with him.
In October the printer rang to say the Saturday sheet would be run in black only. I sat up half the night with the mainland ferry timetable and a red biro. I put the bow back in the top corner where the boy had left it and drew a line from dot one to dot twenty-seven. It crossed the harbour wall, the sleeping gulls and the wet slate roofs, and stopped neatly at the lighthouse.
On Saturday the boy came in, found his sheet on the counter, and went straight to the bow. 'It's the right way round now,' he said. He did not pick up the crayon. He just traced the line with one finger, from the first dot to the last, and for once I did not correct him.
