Hello Kitty tattoo on the side of the waist

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character with a pink bow is tattooed on the side of a bare waist, with one hand raised near her face. The bold black outlines are filled with flat areas of pink, red and white, with no visible shading. The tattoo sits on the torso above the hip, with the top of the jeans and a braided belt framing the lower part of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came aboard at Lerwick in the spring, when the herring boats were loading salt. Nobody saw her climb the gangplank. Mrs Tulloch, who cooked for the crew, said she had a white face with no mouth to speak of and a pink bow tied on one ear as neat as a parcel. The skipper, Angus Reid, said a ship with a bow on her was bad luck, and then he gave her the end of his herring anyway.

For eleven weeks she rode the rail. She raised one small paw whenever the nets came up full, and the men said she was waving at the gulls. When the wind went round to the north and the swell came over the bow, she sat on the hatch cover in her red dress and would not move, and the men said that was the bravest thing they had seen. Nobody had dressed her, and nobody could say where the red had come from.

Off the Faroes the mate went over the side for a bucket and the rope parted. He was in the water with the cold closing on his chest when a pink bow came down the line like a bright thread. The cat had gone along the spar, which no cat should have done, and she sat on the rope end with her paw up. They hauled him in on her rope.

At Lerwick again they looked for her and found only a pink bow on the gangplank, folded square, with a fish head laid beside it. Mrs Tulloch kept it in her apron pocket for the rest of her life.
