A sheet of temporary tattoo designs showing Hello Kitty in simple black outline, with one large pair and four smaller versions. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told the small paper cat was a sign, though nobody in the community could agree whether it was a sign of grace or of mischief. It arrived on the Feast of Saint Brendan in a parcel from Leeds, pushed under the scriptorium door with the customs slip still stuck to it. It was not a cat at all, but a sheet of thin white paper printed with little smiling kittens in black outline.

Brother Mark, who kept the bees and resented every new thing, declared it frivolous. I said nothing. I had spent thirty years copying psalms in a hand so steady the abbot once asked whether I had been born holding a ruler. I had never once drawn anything that made me laugh. The large pair on the sheet sat with their wide blank faces and their tidy bows, one in a plain dress, the other with folded wings at her back and a wreath of flowers at her crown.

I cut the winged one out with the good shears, the ones reserved for vellum, and propped her against the lectern beside the Book of Hours I was illuminating. She was not a distraction, I told myself. She was a model. For a week I drew her small wings in the margins of the Lamentations, and each morning she was the first thing I looked at, before the bell for Lauds, before the cold water on my face.

On the seventh morning she was gone. Brother Mark stood in the cloister looking sheepish, a pale corner of paper stuck to his habit sleeve, and confessed he had pressed her onto the veil of the nearest hive to frighten off the wasps. They had found her terribly unnerving, he said. I did not reprimand him. I peeled the remaining kittens from the sheet, laid them flat under a psalter to dry, and at Vespers I sang louder than I have sung in years.
