Hello Kitty with heart balloon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of Hello Kitty, with a white body, black outline and red bow, floats beside a red heart-shaped balloon tied to a thin black string. The linework is delicate and the heart has light red shading, with the rest of the design left as clean skin tone. The tattoo sits low on the wrist, centred in a close crop against a plain light background.

Now sit yourself down by the range, and mind the kettle, because this is the one about the white cat who came up the Hollin Pit with a balloon. Nobody in Ashgrove had seen a cat like her. She had a red bow on one ear, a face as round as a pay packet, and she walked across the wet cobbles as if coal dust had never been invented. Old Tom Pryce swore she was a ghost. My mother said she was only a cat who fancied a bit of company down a hole.

The balloon was the trouble. It was a heart, red as a fresh cut, tied to her paw with a length of black twine she'd pulled off a bundle of pit props. Every morning she sat at the cage gate while the men clocked on, and the heart bobbed above her head, and not one of them could say where she got it. Wilf Dobson tried to untie it once and came up grinning with nothing but a scrap of string in his fist and his cap full of soot.

Then came the winter the roof gave at the far face, and forty men were under it for two days. On the third morning the cage came up with only the cat aboard, sitting bolt upright on the platform, the heart drifting above her. It didn't go up towards the sky. It leaned west, slow as a sleepy bee, towards the old ventilation shaft nobody had used since the strike.

The rescue party followed the string of that heart through the workings, past a fall of stone and a fall of rain, until they heard knocking. Wilf was first to the gap. He swore after that he'd only ever seen the cat sitting on the rubble with her tail curled round her feet, looking pleased with herself, and the heart tied quietly to a fallen beam, holding fast where it had been left.
