Hogwarts castle skyline with script quote
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A thin black line drawing of a jagged castle skyline with several spires, towers and a tall central peak. Flowing cursive script runs across the lower half of the drawing, with the words Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home, the word home set larger at the bottom. The linework is uniform and unshaded, on a plain off-white background with the design filling most of the frame.

Mairi Gillies had carried the post out to Eilean Dubh for thirty-one winters, and in all that time nobody had ever asked her to wait for an answer. So when the grey owl dropped onto the wet rail of the ferry with a sealed envelope tied to its leg, she stood with the mooring rope slack in her hands and did not know what to do with her face.

The letter was addressed in green ink to Ailsa Brodie, who had died in the spring. Mairi knew because she had rowed the wreath across the sound herself. The owl waited, unbothered, its feathers beaded with spray, while Mairi turned the envelope over and over. Inside was a single sheet with a drawing of a castle, all spires and sharp black roofs, and beneath it a looping hand that read: Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.
She had never been to any castle. She had seen nothing but the lighthouse, the kirk and the grey hump of the mainland. Still, she rowed out past the skerries that evening with the letter buttoned inside her coat, and when the mist thinned she saw them: towers lifting out of the fog, a hundred windows lit gold, a bell ringing somewhere in the stone.
The gate creaked open before she reached the steps. A woman in a moth-eaten cardigan stood there holding a second envelope, and her cuffs were stained green. "You'll be the postwoman," she said. "Ailsa always wrote to whoever carried the post. She said you'd come when the owl got lost." Mairi took it. It was addressed to her, in the same green ink, and underneath, in smaller letters, someone had written only the word home.
