Horned character portrait on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large portrait of a pale-faced woman in profile, wearing a dark horned headdress and a high dark collar. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft grey tones on the skin and headdress and sharp highlights on the horns and collar. Vivid pink and red smoky tones fill the background, while the green eyes and red lips provide the strongest colour accents.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the peat smoke, it goes wherever it likes on Scarra. My grandmother had this tale from her own grandmother, and she swore the woman in it lived up at the Gap of Ness, where the rock comes down in steps to the water.

She was no one's wife. The men of the island said she had come off a wrecked ship with nothing but a black shawl and two horns she had grown by staring at the sun too long. Her eyes were the green of sea glass and they saw through fog the way a gull sees through glass. When the boats went out for herring and the mist rolled in thick as wool, she stood on the highest step with her chin up, and the fishermen steered by the red of her mouth, bright as a rope burn, and they came home.

Then came the year Tomas Breck took the boat out alone to prove he needed no one's light. He did not come back, and the old men said that was her doing. The women carried bread up to the gap and bad names with it. She heard them and did not argue. She only turned her face to the pink smoke rising off the peat stacks and said, Let them shout. Fog is not a thing you can argue with.

Tomas walked in on the next full tide, soaked to the belt and laughing, having spent the night on a skerry the mist had hidden from him. He said he had seen a light the whole way and it had kept pointing him home. The women looked up at the cliff. The headland was empty, the mist had gone out to sea, and the only sound left was someone humming low over the water.
