Hoverboard tattoo with teal splash
Colour · Photo
A hoverboard is drawn in pink and purple with white and grey wheels, shown at a slight angle with clean outlines. Behind it sits a soft teal watercolour wash, and parts of other tattoos appear at the edges of the photo. The shading is smooth and the colours are bright against the pale skin.

Nobody aboard the night crossing believed the lad could make it float, least of all me, and I've been coiling ropes on this ferry for nineteen years. He came up from the car deck with a pink board tucked under one arm, its two chunky wheels catching the deck lights like pale eyes, and told me he'd bought it off a man in Ipswich who swore it had been left behind by someone in a hurry.

He set it down on the aft deck where the wake churned up teal in the floodlights. Three students stopped arguing about football. He planted one trainer, then the other, knees soft, and the board rose an inch, then a hand's width, its purple stripe humming like a struck wire. Somebody's phone went up. Spray hung in the air around him and never touched the wheels.
The trouble with a thing that floats is that it grows opinions. The board drifted past the rail and out over the foam trail the ship left behind, and the lad whooped and leaned after it, and for one long breath the two of them hung there above the dark water, pink against teal, going nowhere in any hurry at all. Then a gust off the North Sea caught it square and it slid away towards the horizon.
At the Hook of Holland the lad stood on the quay with empty hands, grinning at the sky going pale over the harbour. When I asked where his board had got to, he just tipped his head east and said it had gone ahead to find the morning first.
